Education Programs

Education in Graphic Communications is a primary concern for NPES. The Association's first standing committee, the Education Committee, was founded to address the issues of securing well-trained personnel for the future of the industry. The Association continues to develop and promote programs and initiatives that support career awareness, provide education and training, and keep consumers of printed products informed.

Graphic Arts Education and Research Foundation

NPES is a founding partner of The Graphic Arts Education and Research Foundation (GAERF®). GAERF was created in 1983 by the National Association for Printing Leadership (NAPL), NPES, and the Printing Industries of America. These three national associations, who jointly own the Graphic Arts Show Company (GASC), created GAERF to channel a portion of the revenues earned by GASC-managed shows into programs and initiatives that promote a positive industry image and support recruitment and training of a skilled workforce.

NPES Outreach

NPES provides financial support to industry-related educational organizations, which include the International Graphic Arts Education Association, the Print and Graphic Scholarship Foundation, and SkillsUSA.

NPES Endowed Scholarship Fund

In 2001, the NPES Board of Directors created the Regis J. Delmontagne Endowed Scholarship fund with a contribution of $300,000 to the Print and Graphics Scholarship Foundation (PGSF). Creation of the fund honored NPES President Regis J. Delmontagne on the occasion marking his 25-year anniversary as the Association’s chief executive. The purpose of the endowed scholarship is twofold: to encourage bright young people to plan for careers in the industry and to benefit the employees and children of NPES member companies.

To be eligible for the NPES scholarships, a candidate shall be preparing for a career in graphic communications, planning to attend a school in the United States, with a major including, but not limited to, the study of print/graphic communication production, print/graphic communication management, business administration, chemistry, physics and engineering. Candidates must meet standard PGSF requirements.

Applicants should indicate their NPES connection on the application form. Additional consideration will be given to graduates of PrintED® accredited programs. Applications must be postmarked by March 1st of each year for high school students and by April 1st of each year for college students.

NPES Literacy Program

Recognizing the importance of literacy to the future of the nation and the graphic communications industry, NPES joined ProLiteracy Worldwide to promote programs that raise awareness and improve adult literacy. Grassroots efforts promote a literate, reading public and the Print Partners program encourages members to produce usable trade show printing and provide pro bono demonstration printing. Volunteers are needed by literacy programs all across the country.

You can help:

  • Visit the ProLiteracy Worldwide and find a literacy organization in your area to contact and offer in-kind assistance and financial support.
  • Encourage your employees to become literacy volunteers.
  • Send your literacy volunteer stories to NPES so we can encourage other members to get involved in our Literacy Changes Lives - New Readers are Print Consumers program.
